Hashtag My (First) Day in LA

Aside from a pretty tight connection at Pearson International (made it to the gate with just 3 minutes left until boarding) the transit experience was smooth. I am great at sleeping on planes, but instead managed to fit in some movies (I Feel Pretty, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, and Thor: Ragnarok), all of which I thoroughly enjoyed, which is no surprise, since flights where the washroom queue is half the aircraft's length indisputably fosters the best viewing environment.

T picked me up from LAX and brought me to Mendocino Farms for lunch. I ordered on her recommendation and was blown away by The Impossible Salad (topped with plant-based chorizo-spiced Impossible Burger meat and avocado with house vegan cashew chipotle ranch dressing - deadly). On our way out we stopped into Paper Source and were recruited to make our own (free!) postcards, which was an impromptu treat.

After some catch-up chats we went to The Broad in the evening, the highlights of which were Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room ("The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away", covered with mirrors and hanging lights, reflecting and expanding exponentially) and Ragnar Kjartansson’s installation The Visitors (an hour long, single take recording of nine artists' performances simultaneously shot in separate rooms of an estate in New York - eerily beautiful).

For dinner we went with A to Library Alehouse for a flight of beer, and I had their signature burger (medium, which is definitely not something that has ever been distinguished when ordering one at home). It was a super pleasant atmosphere and I really enjoyed the couple of sours I tried.

We capped the night with a visit to Salt and Straw (small batch, handmade ice cream with locally sourced ingredients), and after being mildly overwhelmed by their list of unique flavours, I opted for what might have been the most delicious waffle cone I have ever experienced. Which is saying something, because in the end I straight up chose vanilla.

It was the first time in years I stayed up for a full 24h. Stoked to be staying with amazing, hospitable friends. Great start to the week!

QotD, Skeptical Customs Officer: What do you know about the Dave Matthews Band? You're too young for that.
